ZX Planet - Spectrum Heaven! - Xtender Emulator Review

Another emulator in which you must pay a registration fee to remove annoying screens and time limits - I'm sure that some of you will be pressing your back button now.

Xtender is capable of emulating the following systems:

ZX80/ZX81

Both the ZX80 and ZX81 are very early Spectrum models and if you are serious about emulating these systems then this is probably the best one for the job.

So what do you require?

484DX2/66, 16MB RAM and an MS-DOS compatible sound card.

Emulator Installation
Installation
Requires WinZIP to decrunch.
Emulator Ease Of Use
Ease Of Use

This emulator is very difficult to use and as there are many more emulators available that can run ZX80/ZX81 programs I recommend you try something else before this one, sorry Carlo.

Emulator Compatibility
Compatibility
The author claims that almost complete compatibility with all software written for the ZX80/81 is achieved by Xtender, we personally couldn't get anything to run.
Emulator Graphics
Graphics

There are no screen shots on the web site and we couldn't get anything other than the grey BASIC screen to come up - we therefore cannot comment on the graphics in this emulator.

Emulator Sound
Sound
The same goes for the sound :O(
Emulator Speed
Speed
Although we couldn't get games to work we did perform a little bit of coding on the emulator and it was damned fast, if you like playing with command lines then maybe you will want to try this emulator.
Emulator Registration
Registration
The beauty of emulation is that most authors create these superb programs in their free time and therefore expect nothing in return. Xtender breaks these rules and the user must pay a registration fee of EUR 18.00 which I am sure will repulse people from trying this emulator.
