X128 Emulator Review - ZX Planet

X128 is an MS-DOS based ZX Spectrum emulator capable of emulating the following systems:

48K/128K/128K+2/128K+2A/128K+3

Designed for your PC this is a great emulator, providing you are used to the MS-DOS system. All of the options can be accessed using those F-Keys you hardly use on any other program.

X128 works perfectly on a 486 DX2/66 with 16MBs of RAM and an MS-DOS compatible sound card.

Installation	Requires WinZIP to decrunch and also requires the separate sinclair rom images (coded when distribution was illegal).
Ease Of Use	As the emulator is MS-DOS based and of course doesn't have the rich interface found in Win32 based emulators it can be a little consusing at first but once you hit F1 you will find all the options you need to use this awesome emulator.
Compatibility	This emulator is capable of running all the games we tested it with (around 100+) and it runs them at an accurate speed. X128 is capable of reading emulated games in (SNA/Z80/TAP/SLT/VOC/DSK/TZX) formats.
Graphics	This emulator does not use scan line enhancements to visualy improve the look of Spectrum graphics in full screen but the quality is very high indeed. The games look closer to the original machine than they would with scan lines.
Sound	As many people can tell you getting sound to work in MS-DOS based emulators can be tricky but this emulator detected my sound card very quickly and began to work instantly. The emulated sound output can sometimes be a little out of tune depending on the game you are running but this may be fixed in later versions.
Speed	The speed is very close to that of the real machine and does not overclock itself on faster machines. There are no options to increase the speed of the emulated Z80 or the emulated cassette loading times in this emulator though.
Registration	The beauty of emulation is that most authors create these superb programs in their free time and therefore expect nothing in return. X128 does not have a registration fee and is 100% free.
