ZX Planet - Spectrum Heaven! - Vagellis Karpatzianis

Hailed as one of the best ZX Spectrum emulators currently available the ZX32 author has been offered interviews here, there and everywere over the past few months - including the New York times.

Underneath you can see a screenshot of ZX32 in action, looks pretty nice doesn't it!. As its full name cunningly implies, zx32 is an emulator of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum range of home computers and runs on the Windows® 95, 98 (or Windows NT® 4.00) operating system. This program and all its support software is distributed as Freeware and comes with absolutely no warranty.

ZX32 has the following features:

  • Sinclair Interface I/II, Sinclair ZX Printer, 128K keypad, Mirage Microdrive, MGT Disciple/+D disk interface, Romantic Robot Multiface I/128, AMX Mouse support.
  • Implementation of undocumented Z80 flags (and correct implementation of the official ones, in some cases).
  • Built-in debugger/monitor.
  • Real Disk Drive/Printer/Tape support.
  • ACH, MDR, PRG, RAW, SEM, SIT, SNX, SP, SPC, ZX file format support (Z80 snapshots that rely on un-implemented hardware, non-RIFF ZXS files and Warajevo TAP files are not supported either.)
  • Support for 4/24/32-bit color resolutions.
  • Sound through the PC Speaker.

ZX32 the Windows based Spectrum emulator

ZX32 comes with a set of games and is without a doubt an option packed emulator for this great machine and very easy to use - none of those MS-DOS problems that have prevented many people from using Spectrum emulators in the past, get this emulator NOW!.

Thanks to Vaggelis for taking part in this interview.

Hi Vaggelis!

Vagellis
Hi Malc!

Malc
When did you own or do you own a Spectrum Computer?

Vagellis
I don't own a real Speccy. Never did actually :)

Malc
What made you decide to code a Spectrum emulator?

Vagellis
As I recall I came by WSpecEm covermounted on a magazine (PC Format most probably - there weren't any PC games magazines to talk about at the time). Windows 95 was still new but I'd been using (and programming for) it since the first late '93 betas came out. The source to WSpecEm was included so I thought I'd have a go at porting it to 32 bits. After a while and for one reason or another (I'm trying to be kind on Rui's code here :) I decided to start from scratch and create a true Win32 emulator using an assembly core. The rest, as they say, is history.

Malc
How long have you been in the Spectrum emulation scene?

Vagellis
Long enough to have watched JPP development. It still is my favorite DOS emulator :)

Malc
Are there any other projects you are working on, either Spectrum based or otherwise?

Vagellis
None. I just came out of the army.

Malc
Do you plan to continue updating the ZX32 emulator or do you feel that emulation is pretty much complete?

Vagellis
I believe that zx32 is a full-featured emulator (people have used it for years without asking for any significant updates) but I'm still working on it.

Malc
Which areas of the emulator do you feel can be improved in the future?

Vagellis
I have to freeze the source at some point and work on the documentation and packaging since I feel that a new full release is due by now.

Malc
Do you currently spend a lot of free time on ZX32 or is the project just a hobby or side project?

Vagellis
I spend most of my time these days answering 20 months worth of e-mail. I've invested more than two years of hard work on my emulator and I can afford to continue development at a slower pace now.

Malc
What if any new features can the users expect to see in the next update to ZX32?

Vagellis
I've built up a list of things to do, based on the requests I've got so far and I'm trying to work my way through it. Antialiasing in fullscreen mode is most likely to be implemented next but, in general, the list includes bug fixes and usability enhancements rather than major new features.

Malc
How do you feel about the legalities surrounding the distribution of Spectrum software (games etc)?

Vagellis
I'm the wrong person to ask for an objective view on the subject. I've been a cracker for too many years on the CPC and the PC scene.

Malc
How do you feel about the current state of the emulation scene (fake emulators etc)?

Vagellis
Fake emulators? I've got a lot of catching up to do...

Malc
How would you feel if the Spectrum computer made a come back with modern technology?

Vagellis
It has already made too many comebacks, I believe. Besides the 128K and the plus models, all sorts of Speccy compatibles were made in Eastern Europe during the last decade.

Malc
What is your favourite Spectrum game?

Vagellis
Many of the games distributed with zx32 are my favorite ones. If I have to pick just one then it's Manic Miner (surprise! :)

Malc
Have you ever created software for any machine other than the PC?

Vagellis
If that means platform-specific then I've only programmed for the CPC. I got to play with lots of machines and OSs at the university though.

Malc
Thats it!, thank you for your time.

Vagellis
OK, see you.
