ZX Planet - Spectrum Heaven! - R80 Emulator Review

R80 is another Spectrum emulator to grace the MS-DOS platform, capable of emulating the following systems:

16K/48K/128K/128K+2/128K+2A/128K+3

Pentagon/Scorpion

This is also the first Spectrum emulator I have seen that is capable of emulating the early Pentagon and Scorpion systems. So what does your PC need to re-play the classics? lets see:

P133, 16MB RAM, MS-DOS Compatible sound card.

Emulator Installation
Installation
Requires WinZIP to decrunch.
Emulator Ease Of Use
Ease Of Use

This emulator is very easy to use once you press F1 and it has a much better file selector than the one found in Z80 Stealth. You can easily save snapshots by pressing F7 and giving your picture a name and much more besides.

Emulator Compatibility
Compatibility
R80 can read (SNA/Z80//SP/SIT/SLT/TZX/TAP/VOC/TRD/SCL/FDI) data formats.
Emulator Graphics
Graphics

The graphics are very good and no attempt is made to enhance the edges of any on screen graphics (scan line etc). In game graphics are spot on (as most emulators) and once again I couldn't find anything to complain about. You can also alter many of the display settings by hitting F1.

Emulator Sound
Sound
The sound is pretty accurate in most games we tested although it is recommended that you run the emulator in true MS-DOS mode rather than a Windows DOS prompt.
Emulator Speed
Speed
Again the speed is superb providing your machine meets the above specification but as with most minimum specs it's always best to go one above so I recommend a P166 with 32MB RAM.
Emulator Registration
Registration
The beauty of emulation is that most authors create these superb programs in their free time and therefore expect nothing in return. R80 does not have a registration fee and is 100% free.
